'Tis the Season for Rewards Day!

This week, all classes have had the opportunity to experience the Art Room Rewards Day! This day is something that the classes have earned throughout the year by working hard and staying on task! Rewards Day is a great day to celebrate arts and crafts and participate in things we don't always get to do in the art room. Students have been having fun using materials such as Model Magic and scratch art as well as making bubble prints and ugly holiday sweaters! Wishing you all the happiest of holidays and a relaxing winter break!

Hot and Cold Colored Lions with Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have been working on lions inspired by the book, "Library Lion." We created lions together and then completed the lion by choosing a color family of either hot ( red, orange, yellow) or cold ( blue, green, violet). Each lion is completely unique and shows such beautiful control of the crayon media. Way to go, Kinder friends!

Mondrian-Inspired Collages with Grade One

First grade students have been learning about the artist, Piet Mondrian and his abstract style of painting using the primary colors. To create a piece in his style, students are using the collage technique of gluing cut paper. Students have just begun their collages and will continue to work next week to fill up their space and complete their work with black lines very similar to Mondrian.

Sunset Scenes with Grade Two

Second grade students are currently working on finishing a sunset landscape demonstrating their knowledge of the warm/hot colors. Students explored the wash technique for painting their backgrounds using red, yellow, and orange and then observed photos of sunsets before creating their own landscape. Students noticed that as the sun begins to set, the objects in the landscape appear almost like a shadow of black as the light is no longer on the houses and trees, but behind them. Each landscape is unique to the child as they created and placed elements of a landscape independently. Beautiful work, students!

Optical Illusion Art in Progress with Grade Five

Grade five students are in the beginning stages of creating an optical illusion art project which will demonstrate an understanding of color theory using both analogous and complementary colors. These projects, while small, require a great deal of concentration and careful craftsmanship! Stay tuned...

Zentangled Flowers with Grade Four

Grade four students have been working hard to complete their flowers inspired by the art of zentangling. Students learned about purposeful doodling as a way to improve concentration and help with relaxation. These beautiful flowers were then completed by applying a value scale of different tints of paint by adding white to the background color.  Such amazing work from our fourth graders here at SMS!
